The first chiropractic patient was treated in 1895. Dr. D.D. Palmer performed the first chiropractic spinal adjustment on his deaf janitor, Harvey Lillard. Lillard’s hearing returned and Palmer thought he had discovered a cure for deafness. But as patients with digestive troubles, sciatica, migraine headaches, epilepsy, heart problems, back pain and many other conditions responded to spinal care, Palmer realized that he had discovered something more far-reaching indeed.

Palmer opened a school to teach chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa in 1897. Since then, chiropractic has evolved into a large and well respected specialty with over 75,000 practicing doctors and there are now 15 schools teaching chiropractic in the US.

Although it has been over 100 years since chiropractic was founded, current research and studies have found that the basic principles and philosophies D.D. Palmer taught are very accurate.
